UWC Dentistry has revamped its Jama’at Khana and Salaah Room.
The University of the Western Cape (UWC) Faculty of Dentistry is currently prioritising improving its infrastructure at its Tygerberg Campus with the objective of creating an environment that promotes learning, mental wellness and spiritual wellness.

The faculty has set out to align the look and feel of the building's common areas to its vision of becoming a global player in teaching, training and research.

The Jama’at Khana and Salaah Room at the campus needed an upgrade and the call was made to alumni from the Muslim community who supported the drive with enthusiasm.

Dr Nazira Essa, who spearheaded the upgrade and fundraising efforts, said it was a heartwarming and rewarding experience.

“When I emailed the Dean, I actually wasn’t expecting a response from him, because he’s so busy. But he did respond, and in the first meeting it went very well, and I knew that this would happen,” she said.

Unveiling the new facilities was also a chance for Dentistry students and staff to offer Zuhr Salaah before celebrating the revamped space by hosting a light lunch.

Third-year dentistry student Zubair Royker said this was going to make a big difference to the student experience on campus.

“I look forward to making Salaah here, because I never used to before. I appreciate that this now means I will have quick access to the Salaah room on campus,” he said.

First-year dentistry student, Afnaan Toefy, agreed: “This is a very modern facility and pleasing to the eye. I am grateful that it’s here now.”

Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Professor Veerasamy Yengopal, said he looks forward to future projects where alumni will be able to assist in making the current student experience better for the next generation of dentists.
