UWC downs Fort Hare
UWC Rugby Club continued their winning ways in the Varsity Shield when they beat FNB Fort Hare 49-34 in a breath-taking match at UWC Sports Stadium on Thursday, 19 February 2015.
The win lifted the University team to third spot in the log standings with nine points, equal to second-placed UKZN Impi, and it puts the team in good stead to realise their goal of reaching the final and winning the tournament.
In front of a cheerful capacity crowd, UWC took the game to the visitors from the start, scoring three tries inside the opening 10 minutes to take complete control of the game.
Wing, James Verity-Amm, opened the floodgates, and scrumhalf Damien Stevens doubled the lead before Verity-Amm grabbed his second try to make the score 18-0.
The visitors hit back to reduce the lead to 18-8 at the first strategy break, but UWC flyhalf Quaid Langeveldt crossed the line to ensure the home side of the bonus point before lending a hand when he raced up the field before aiding hooker Wayron Losper to touch down, stretching the lead to 28-8.
Fort Hare fought back with two quick tries to cut the deficit to 28-21, and it seemed to be anyone’s game as the visitors took advantage of an extra man to make it 28-26 when lock Brandon Valentyn was sent to the sin bin for a dangerous tackle, followed by prop Tahriq Allen.
However, UWC surprised the visitors when Valentyn returned from the sin bin to score their sixth try, and Langeveldt’s conversion put them ahead 36-26 by the second strategy break.
Verity-Amm grabbed his hat-trick and Valentyn scored his second to end the game at 49-34, after Fort Hare had scored another try of their own. Damian Stevens received his second consecutive FNB Player that Rocks award for his sterling performance.
The win has given the team a much needed boost ahead of their tough trip to battle log-leaders FNB Wits in Johannesburg on Monday.
