UWC Faculty of Law's Centre for African Fintech, Innovation and Law (CAFIL) Hosts Book Launch on Intellectual Property and Sustainable Development in Africa

On Monday 16 February 2026, UWC Faculty of Law's Centre for African Fintech, Innovation and Law (CAFIL) hosted the launch of Intellectual property rights and sustainable development goals in Africa (CRC Press, 2025), a scholarly volume contributing to important conversations about the intersection between intellectual property (IP) law and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within African contexts.

Held at the Faculty’s Kader Asmal Moot Court, the event brought together academics, legal practitioners, Faculty of Law students and researchers for thoughtful engagement around the themes explored in the book.
The volume is edited by Desmond Oriakhogba, Charlene Musiza, and Sand Mba-Kalu, and published by CRC Press, an imprint of Taylor & Francis.

The book explores the intersection between intellectual property (IP) law and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within African contexts. It examines how IP frameworks can both enable and complicate development efforts in areas such as public health, agriculture, innovation, environmental sustainability, technology transfer and gender empowerment. The volume places particular emphasis on African perspectives in shaping development-oriented IP systems.

The launch programme featured reflections from the editors and contributors, as well as thoughtful reviews by Anthony C.K. Kakooza and Lineekela Ihuhua, whose insights enriched the discussion and highlighted the significance of the publication. The session concluded with engaging dialogue between the panel and attendees.

The Faculty extends its appreciation to the editors, contributors, reviewers and all who participated in making the event a meaningful scholarly engagement. The publication represents an important contribution to research at the intersection of intellectual property law and sustainable development in Africa.
