UWC hosts 5th Annual Tutu Peace Lecture
The 5th annual Desmond Tutu International Peace Lecture was held at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) on Wednesday, 7 October in celebration of former chairperson of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s 84th birthday.
Welcoming guests at the UWC Great hall, Rector and Vice-Chancellor Professor Tyrone Pretorius said it was awe-inspiring to note that the event was so well attended, in spite of the fact that it was competing with the Springboks versus USA Rugby World Cup match.
In his address Professor Pretorius welcomed Archbishop Desmond Tutu saying: “We are delighted to have you back on campus with us after your bout of illness. I trust that the nurses who looked after you were gentle and kind, and I hope that they were trained here at the University of the Western Cape.”
This year’s installment of the lecture, entitled “Democracy and Peace: What’s law got to do with it?”, was presented by South African Public Protector, Advocate Thulisile (Thuli) Madonsela. She expressed her gratitude at being invited to speak at the event saying: “It is a great honour for me to be associated with Archbishop Desmond Tutu, as he is a crusader for justice, peace and general human goodness or Ubuntu”.
In her address she drew on her experience as an advocate of the High Court of South Africa, human rights and constitutional lawyer, seasoned administrative investigator, equality expert and policy specialist. She explained the rule of law in terms of the promotion of peace and democracy saying: “World peace and democracy is a timely conversation. Peace is something the world is desperately searching for right now, and law is not everything – because it does not force peace, as peace is not the absence of war”.
The panellists at the event included Executive Director of the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, Reverend Mpho Tutu; the Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela; UWC Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tyrone Pretorius; and Archbishop Desmond Tutu as well as UWC Chancellor, Archbishop Dr Thabo Makgoba.
The Desmond Tutu International Peace Lecture is an annual event presented by the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, in partnership with the University of the Western Cape. The lecture series was inaugurated by His Holiness The Dalai Lama (connected via satellite from India) in 2011. Subsequent lectures have been delivered by Ms Graca Machel (2012), Mr Kofi Annan (2013) and Mrs Mary Robinson (2014).
