In light of a changing world, where face-to-face engagement has been replaced by ‘online chat’, the University of the Western Cape (UWC) has had to rethink its stance on celebrations of its 60th anniversary. With that the alumni relations office is now going about hosting a series of webinars to keep their alumni community informed of university and global happenings.
On Sunday, 9 August 2020, the alumni office held its inaugural webinar for its UK and European alumni community. The webinar included a series of motivational talks from Professor Vivienne Lawack, UWC Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic and Ms Patricia Lawrence, UWC Director: Institutional Advancement on the strides UWC has made, especially during such a challenging time.
The webinar brought together old friends who share a similar history and stories of struggle whilst studying at the university in the 1980’s, at the height of the apartheid regime.
Mr Leslie Maasdorp, keynote speaker, UWC alumnus and Chief Financial Officer at the New Development Bank touched on various topics relevant to the global changes we now face as we deal with the current global pandemic of COVID19, US-China relations as well as how his education at UWC has equipped him to deal with current global changes.
The university is grateful to the UK alumni network for their commitment to this new approach of connecting online and their continued support of the university and its alumni related initiatives.
