A new partnership between the University of the Western Cape (UWC), Islamic Relief and Pelican Park High School is helping to grow, cultivate and nurture the next generation of agricultural entrepreneurs, while introducing learners to cutting-edge farming technology.

Pelican Park High, the only school in the Cape Town metropolitan area offering agricultural studies, has built a reputation for excellence since the subject was introduced five years ago. The programme serves approximately 120 learners from Grades 10 to 12 and has maintained a 100% pass rate in Agricultural Sciences for four consecutive years.

Farm Manager at the school, Clifford Caesar, said there are many opportunities that await the students when they graduate, not just farming: “Most of the students actually become entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs, because these two subjects (Agri-tech and Farm Management) expose them to at least fifty-two job opportunities, because they learn so much more like science, technology and engineering, as well as management.”

Learners receive practical training in soil management, crop production, harvesting, processing and marketing. The school operates outdoor gardens (and hydroponic tunnels soon) that produce a variety of crops, including spinach, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, spring onions and peppers. Harvested produce supports the school feeding scheme and is also sold at community market days held every six weeks.

Building on this foundation, UWC is introducing a vertical hydroponic farming system that will significantly expand production while exposing learners to emerging agricultural technologies. The innovative system will be installed on the walls of the school’s greenhouse, adding capacity for approximately 600 additional crops without affecting existing farming activities. Each two-metre vertical unit will accommodate 48 plants using a soil-free, nutrient-rich water circulation system.

For learners, the project offers more than increased food production. It provides hands-on experience with farming technologies that are becoming increasingly important in modern agriculture. UWC Project Manager Ridaa Manuel said this is a win-win because learners are empowered, while crops are shared with those who need them most. “This in itself requires some science and engineering to build and design, so the students get that experience as well.

It will be used to give back to those who cannot afford and don't have access to such crops,” said Manuel.

The bumper crops produced by the hydroponic system will be shared with 12 women who have been identified by Islamic Relief due to them becoming caregivers for orphans and children at risk. The school already distributes its crops at a regular market, and excess produce is donated to those in need.

By connecting university expertise in science and engineering with a local school, this project is creating opportunities for young people while demonstrating how innovation can contribute to food security, skills development and community empowerment.
