The University of the Western Cape (UWC) joined community members, police and safety stakeholders in Bellville South for a Heritage Week Solidarity Chain initiative that promoted social cohesion, unity and safer communities.

Held on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, the initiative brought together members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Bellville South Community Policing Forum (CPF) and community representatives, neighbourhood watch and UWC staff representatives under the theme “Different Cultures – One Nation”.

The initiative celebrated South Africa’s rich cultural diversity while strengthening partnerships between law enforcement agencies, community structures and residents. Through this collective demonstration of solidarity, participants joined hands to promote peace, mutual respect, social cohesion and a shared commitment to safer communities. They walked down Kasselvlei Street and sang the national anthem in unison as the chain stretched from one end of the road to another. UWC’s Risk and Compliance Directorate coordinated the University’s participation, focusing on strengthening community engagement and demonstrating UWC’s commitment to safety, diversity and meaningful partnerships with surrounding communities.

The University’s delegation included representatives from Risk and Compliance, Campus Protection Services, Securitas, Pro Events, staff and Institutional Advancement. UWC participants were dressed in cultural and traditional attire and others in the UDubs apparel - the lifestyle brand of the University, to celebrate their diverse identities while standing together in solidarity. The University’s presence also highlighted messages of unity, respect, peace and safer communities. The Solidarity Chain took place from 12.30pm to 1.30pm, with participants embracing the spirit of Heritage Month.

Beyond celebrating cultural heritage, the initiative highlighted the importance of collaboration between universities, law enforcement agencies and local communities in building safer, more inclusive environments. It also provided UWC staff with an opportunity to engage with community safety structures and strengthen relationships with the communities surrounding the University.

As South Africa commemorated its diverse cultural heritage, the Heritage Week Solidarity Chain served as a reminder that meaningful partnerships, mutual respect and collective responsibility are essential to building a united and resilient society.
