UWC Ladies reach Coke final
UWC Ladies Football Club booked their place in the final of the South African Football Association’s (SAFA) Cape Town Coca-Cola Cup women’s division when they trounced Dangerous Heroes of Philippi 3-0 last weekend.
Goals by right back Nomvuzo Mgoduka and the Banyana Banyana pair of, striker Jermaine Seoposenwe and goalkeeper Kaylin Swart, were enough to send the UWC team to their second final of the Coke Cup in five years.
The win has put UWC Ladies in good stead to achieve their objective of winning all three competitions on offer this season. The UWC side is also leading the pack in the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Western Cape Women’s League and is a strong contender for SAFA’s Western Cape Sasol Women’s League.
The Coke game on Sunday, 15 September 2013 at Lingelethu Sports Complex in Site C, Khayelitsha started at a blistering pace with both sides making their intentions of getting an early goal clear. Mgoduka opened the scoring on the third minute when she headed home a corner kick by Seoposenwe.
UWC Ladies forward Chumisa Manyonga could have made it 2-0 20 minutes into the match when she received a defencesplitting pass from Seoposenwe, but her shot went wide. The score remained 1-0 at halftime.
In the second stanza Heroes came back with guns blazing, taking a few shots at UWC goals in search ofan equalizer. But they were either denied by brilliant stops from UWC Ladies goalkeeper Swarts, the upright or missed opportunities.
On the 54th minute Seoposenwe calmed the opponents down when she outran their defence and dribbled past their goalkeeper to put the ball in the back of the net. Manyonga could have put the game beyond the reach of the Heroes when she received a cross from another Banyana Banyana star Leandra Smeda, but she missed with only the keeper to beat.
With 10 minutes remaining, substitute Mantombi Jingqi was brought down inside the 18-area to earn UWC Ladies a penalty. Swarts didn’t hesitate to convert it and put the last nail in the coffin of Heroes.
UWC Ladies will now play either reigning champions Cape Town Roses, Spurs Ladies or Portia FC in the Coke final on 12 October.
