UWC duo to represent SA
Two UWC Ladies Football Club members have been selected for the South African National Under 20 (U20) women’s squad, Basetsana, which will face Botswana in the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
UWC Ladies captain and defender, Vuyo Mkhabela, and her goalkeeper teammate, Kaylin Swart, made the cut into a side that will be involved in a return-leg clash at the Bidvest Stadium on Saturday 9 November. Kick-off is at 15h00. Basetsana won the first leg 5-2 about a week ago, and are expected to secure their place in the next round of the qualifiers.
Swart, a BA student at UWC, was honoured with the captaincy armband and is confident of a win.
“We are excited about the upcoming match. We just want to do the job and qualify for the next round,” said Swart for the SAFA website.
“Looking at the next opponent in the second round we are aware that it will get tougher as we progress. But we need to do what we do best - go out there and score goals. We are up for the challenge and we are going to fight to get that spot in the World Cup tournament," said Swart.
Two African countries will represent the continent at the 2014 edition of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup that is set for Canada from 5 – 24 August.
