UWC Law’s Prof. Muneer Abduroaf Appointed by President Ramaphosa to the CRL Rights Commission
The University of the Western Cape (UWC) Faculty of Law proudly congratulates Associate Professor Muneer Abduroaf on his appointment to the Commission for the Promotion of the Rights of Cultural, Religious, and Linguistic Communities (CRL Rights Commission) by President Cyril Ramaphosa. This esteemed appointment is a testament to Professor Abduroaf's commitment to advancing constitutional values and fostering the promotion and protection of cultural, religious, and linguistic rights in South Africa.
The CRL Rights Commission, established under the South African Constitution of 1996, plays a vital role in ensuring that communities are empowered to enjoy, practice, and preserve their cultural, religious, and linguistic heritage. Section 31 of the Bill of Rights enshrines the rights of individuals to participate in their cultural and religious practices and to maintain associations that celebrate diversity. The Commission undertakes its mandate through proactive and responsive measures, promoting social cohesion and inclusivity.
Professor Abduroaf's appointment follows a rigorous selection process. The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, as the administrative body overseeing the CRL Rights Act, issued a public call for nominations for the 2024–2029 term. After an extensive process involving shortlisting, interviews, and deliberations by a panel chaired by Professor Itumeleng Mosala, recommendations were submitted to the President for final approval.
A valued member of the Department of Private Law at UWC, Professor Abduroaf is widely respected for his expertise and dedication to legal scholarship. His appointment not only underscores his exceptional contributions to the legal fraternity but also reflects UWC's commitment to producing leaders who drive transformation and uphold human rights.
The Faculty of Law is immensely proud of Professor Abduroaf's achievement and confident that his contributions to the CRL Rights Commission will have a lasting impact on the promotion of cultural, religious, and linguistic harmony in South Africa.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Professor Abduroaf and wish him every success in this significant role.
