The story of the Varsity Football Women – an annual competition featuring the country's top university women's football teams – would not be complete without mentioning the University of the Western Cape (UWC).

Of the 10 editions since the tournament's inception in 2013 (in 2020 the competition was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic), UWC has reached the finals eight times, and this year will be no exception.

Last night, they crushed North West University Women's Football 5-0 in Pretoria to set up another final against six-time champions Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in what promises to be a thrilling match on 9 August. UWC lost all four finals against TUT but avoided them when they won the title twice. TUT was last in the final in 2019.

UWC head coach, Thinasonke Mbuli, said her team was happy and excited to reach yet another final, and that maintaining that standard was good for the team. "Reaching the final means wea are still on track in recruiting the right players and making sure that we train them in the right way; hence, we are still doing well in this tournament," Mbuli explained.

Mbuli said that although UWC lost their first match against the University of Johannesburg before scoring 13 goals and conceding once in the following three games, her team has performed well throughout the tournament. "We performed well against UJ (the University of Johannesburg)  but couldn't score, and we made one mistake which led to their goal. But overall, we, as the technical team, are happy with the players' performance."

UWC has a few days to about a week to plot and prepare for the final, which supporters hope will reverse their hoodoo against TUT. After that, UWC will travel to Malawi for the CAF Women's Champions League/COSAFA Qualifiers, scheduled to start on 15 August.
