UWC mourns passing of one of its students

The UWC community is shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Chris Tabang Kgashane (23), a bright final year BSc Computer Science and Physics student. 

According to reports, Kgashane, was found dead in Belhar (opposite Belhar High School) most likely as a result of murder, related to a mugging on Monday 23 November 2015. He was robbed of his laptop and other items. 

The South African police Service (SAPS) has launched an investigation into his murder. 

There have been some rumours circulating on social media that Chris Tabang Kgashane was returning from writing an exam at the Bellville Velodrome. The University can confirm that this is not true - he was due to write his Physics exam on 2 December 2015.

Kgashane, originally from Gauteng, has been living in lodgings in Belhar for the past year.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends in this time of bereavement,” said Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tyrone Pretorius.

The University is in contact with the family and is assisting them in making arrangements to transport his body home, in Gauteng. In addition, support and counselling has been offered to his next of kin.
