He studied at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and became the Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the institution. Therefore it was fitting that he addressed this year’s first-year students as they embark on their academic journey at UWC.  On Monday Prof Pretorius told them to dream big.

“Many years ago, I was in your shoes in this very hall when I started as a first-year UWC student,” he told freshers during the university’s Students Orientation at the Jakes Gerwel Hall.

There were about 4,000 first-years who attended with their parents or guardians. The university received about 60,000 applications from last year’s matriculants. They were introduced to the university leadership as well as various programmes, resources and support structures to aid their success.

“Today, as you sit in this hall, know that you have gained a new family – the UWC family. Your academic journey, however daunting it might seem right now, is not one you will have to walk alone. Because at UWC, we strive to give our students a holistic experience – one that does not only focus on their academic success but also their development as a person.”

Prof Pretorius encouraged the new students to grab with both hands the opportunities of being at a university.

“This is an opportunity to network all over Africa, and up to this day, if I have issues around Africa, there is always someone from UWC that I can reach out to. Do not lose your opportunity to meet your lifelong partner at this university. Many long life partnerships were forged here.”

The Rector told the students that UWC cares about them and their success and that there are systems, mechanisms and people dedicated to ensuring their well-being. In addition to peer facilitators, a range of services are offered by the office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Development - from counselling and assistance for disabled students to leadership and development programmes.

Prof Pretorius stressed that UWC has zero tolerance towards gender-based violence and racial discrimination. “Every student, irrespective of their background, race and sexual orientation is very welcome here. The character of this university was forged in the liberation struggle, and we remain an institution that cares about our society and the communities in which we are located.

“As your journey begins today as the new students of UWC, take a look around this hall. Imagine three or four years from now returning here to receive your degree or diploma to become a graduate of this fine university.”

UWC Registrar, Dr Nita Lawton-Misra, and Chairperson of the Council, Judge Nathan Erasmus, also welcomed the new members of the university community.

Based on the excitement and comments from some of the students, the message was well-received.

Ntlakanipho Ngxitho from Rustenberg in the North West is pursuing her BCom degree and was walking with three new friends during a break from the orientation programme. “Orientation was fine, meeting new people, I guess. I think that has helped me a lot for now. And the speeches (by the Rector and other speakers) were motivating and reassuring that I have made the right decision in coming here,” said Ngxitho.
