UWC Pioneers AI Research in Pharmacy
My work in Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) has marked a significant stride towards ethical, educational, and healthcare advancements.

My research spans ethical frameworks, AI integration in education and pharmacy, and the spearheading of AI principles at UWC, exemplifying my commitment to leveraging AI for societal benefit.

The ethical guidelines for AI in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences are at the heart of my work, emphasising transparency, accountability, and privacy.

My creation of ethical frameworks for AI language models further underscores my dedication to responsible AI use, guiding students and professionals through the ethical complexities of AI technologies. These guidelines are critical in developing AI applications safeguarding patient rights and fostering public trust.

Recently, I played a pivotal role in securing the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) tender for UWC, tasked with developing an AI readiness framework for South Africa. In collaboration with key partners like GIZ FAIR Forward, the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR), and the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), this project emphasises an innovative approach using AI for agile project management.

The CoLab team at UWC, under Professor Leonora Craffert's leadership and involving parallel processes enhanced by digital tools, is set to foster inclusivity, continuous learning, and innovation in AI.

Securing the GIZ tender is a monumental achievement for UWC and a testament to our university's commitment to pioneering AI research and application. This project not only elevates our standing in the international AI community but also underscores our role in shaping an ethical, inclusive, and technologically advanced future for South Africa, as I have noted, highlighting the impact of the BIZ tender on my work and the broader university mission.

The project aims to develop a framework to help decision-making stakeholders in South Africa determine the country’s current position on AI readiness and maturity in different areas, such as data landscape, AI skills and AI infrastructure.

The idea is also to establish indicators and interventions to create a functional, ethical, and globally competitive AI ecosystem. From the School of Pharmacy at UWC, I believe the project is critical for South Africa, noting its potential to position the nation at the forefront of ethical AI development and application, ensuring that AI advancements benefit all sectors of society equally.

Educational Innovations: Shaping Tomorrow's Learning

I envision a future where AI tools personalise learning, enhance educational outcomes, and prepare students for a rapidly evolving digital landscape. My leadership in integrating AI across UWC's academic and administrative operations aims to create an environment ready for innovation and efficiency, preparing the institution for forthcoming challenges and opportunities.

Integrating AI into our educational framework is not just about adopting new technologies; it's about rethinking how we teach and learn in the digital age. This endeavour to infuse AI across our curricula and administrative processes signifies a leap towards a future where education is more personalised, accessible, and engaging for every student.

In healthcare, my work on integrating AI into pharmacy practices seeks to improve patient care and drug development processes. The MzansiMed proposal, aiming to utilise AI to streamline healthcare services and improve patient outcomes, represents a groundbreaking approach to addressing healthcare challenges. By leveraging AI technologies, MzansiMed will facilitate real-time diagnostics, personalised treatment plans, and accessible medical information across all 11 official South African languages, significantly reducing barriers to healthcare access and enhancing the quality of patient care.

My ongoing research and initiatives promise to continue shaping the development of AI applications in healthcare, education, and beyond. My commitment to ethical principles and innovative solutions positions me as a leading figure in the AI landscape, ready to address global challenges and opportunities.
