UWC players nominated for rugby awards
FNB UWC may have bowed out of the Varsity Shield rugby competition, but two of its players stand a chance to win top accolades at the competition’s award ceremony next week.
Captain Frederick Muller will look at retaining the Player that Rocks award he won last year when UWC emerged as runners’ up, and he has also been nominated for the Back that Rocks accolade, alongside teammate and sensational fullback, James Verity-Amm. The two are among 12 players, nominated across three categories, from four of the five universities that participated in the competition.
Voting is split between the public, the players and the Varsity Cup Executive Committee. The public component will make up 40% of the vote, with one vote per person in each category, cast via the Rapport newspaper or the Varsity Cup Facebook page. The players themselves will vote in each category as well, with their input comprising 30% of the total. The Varsity Cup Exco’s votes will also count 30%.
The Player that Rocks will receive a cash prize of R10,000, with the Back that Rocks and Forward that Rocks getting R3,750 each. The voting ends on the day of the Varsity Shield final between reigning champions, CUT Ixias, and UKZN Impi, in Bloemfontein on Monday, 31 March 2014.
Students and staff are encouraged to vote for the two rising stars.
