The University of the Western Cape

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) maintained its global position in the 401–600 band for the fifth consecutive year and was ranked 5th among 13 South African universities in the 2025 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. The ranking is a reflection of UWC’s steady commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

UWC Rector and Vice-Chancellor said: “We are pleased to see UWC recognised once again in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings among the leading top five institutions in our country. Even more pleasing is our global position reflecting our commitment to sustainability and social impact, and our strong performance in SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) among the top 200 universities.

“This is a testament to our commitment to using the academic project to foster inclusivity and equity for enduring societal impact. While we celebrate this progress, UWC will remain focused on further advancing our contributions to sustainable development, both locally and internationally in the forthcoming period.”

UWC is widely recognised as a research-led African university with a legacy of activism and advocacy. It’s therefore notable that one of its strongest areas of performance in these rankings was SDG10 - Reduced Inequalities, where it ranked in the 101–200 band globally and 3rd among seven South African universities. 

With a score of 68.7–76.3, this outcome highlights UWC’s sustained commitment to social inclusion, access to education, and support for marginalised communities.

For SDG 5 - Gender Equality, UWC achieved a ranking in the 201–300 band, ranking 6th among eight South African universities, with a score between 59.5 and 63.1. This performance illustrates progress in promoting gender equity in leadership, staffing and policy development. Institutional efforts to support women in academia, leadership pipelines and gender-responsive planning are contributing factors.

UWC also performed well in SDG 1 - No Poverty - ranking in the 201–300 band and placing 7th in South Africa. This reflects UWC’s strategic engagement in poverty alleviation through targeted financial assistance, community outreach and collaborative partnerships. The ranking demonstrates how the institution continues to expand its contribution to social development beyond the campus context.
