The University of the Western Cape (UWC) has been recognised for advancing data-informed student success interventions. Achieving the Dream (ATD), at its annual 2024 DREAM conference, honoured the University with a special 20th-anniversary award: The Siyaphumelela Network Award.
The Siyaphumelela Network Award celebrates the work of all South African partner institutions in advancing equity and driving student-centred transformation, while enriching student success work done in the US with global insights.
Siyaphumelela is a network of South African universities committed to student success. Funded by the Kresge Foundation, Siyaphumelela means “we succeed”.
It was created in 2014 and has grown from five 5 to 17 universities with increasing participation in Achieving The Dream (ATD).
ATD’s partnership with Siyaphumelela has unceasingly flourished over time, and Siyaphumelela has continued to send representatives to the DREAM conference each year to share and learn from each other’s experiences in transforming and enriching student success.
UWC joined the Siyaphumelela network in 2020 during a challenging time through the Covid-19 pandemic. The University’s core objective was to ensure it provides data-informed interventions to support holistic student success.
Over the last four years, the Siyaphumelela Project at UWC, under the leadership of Prof Subethra Pather as institutional lead, together with project leads Dr Vanessa Brown, Ms Laetitia Permall, Ms Elizabeth Booi and Prof Lorraine Hassan, has laid the foundation of the importance of using data to understand the meaning and drivers of student success in the constantly changing context of UWC.
In addition, UWC at the regional level, has been working together with partners at CPUT and UCT to gain a contextual understanding of student success in the larger landscape of the Western Cape.
As recognition of the University of the Western Cape’s involvement in the Siyaphumelela network and advancing data-informed student success interventions, ATD, at its annual DREAM conference, awarded the University of the Western Cape with the special 20th-anniversary award: The Annual ATD conference brings all benefactors of these projects together to share experiences and talk through best practices.
Important lessons and achievements are discussed, with shared stories from very diverse USA college contexts. The 2024 ATD conference focused on Access, Mobility and Momentum for students in colleges and universities.
At the DREAM Recognitions Luncheon on Wednesday, 21 February 2024 in Florida, USA, all 20th-anniversary awards were presented. UWC got to celebrate this award with other local and international recipients.
In attendance to receive the recognition on behalf of UWC was the Siyaphumelela Institutional Lead, Professor Subethra Pather, from the office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic.
