UWC Rugby aims for 2014 Varsity Shield top honours
The University of the Western Cape’s Director of Rugby and Sport Development, Peter de Villiers, believes his squad has what it takes to lift the FNB Varsity Shield this year.
The Varsity Shield competition starts on 27 January 2014, with UWC taking on their first challenge when they face University of Fort Hare at the Davidson Rugby stadium, in Allice.
UWC’s 2013 Varsity Shield Campaign ended on a high note after finishing 2nd to the Central University of Technology in the Free State.
De Villiers urges all UWC staff, students and the community to rally behind the squad in support of their FNB Varsity Shield Campaign.
De Villiers’ squad will play two warm-up games against the University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University in January. De Villiers describes these two games as the perfect opportunity to prepare for the competition.
“We are looking forward to the competition and are expecting good results,” notes De Villiers.
“We have many new players in this years setup, so we are excited to see how we will perform this year. Last year, our structures we had put in place worked, so more work will be done to perfect our game plan for this campaign.”
On Monday 3 February 2014 at 19:00, UWC will play their first home game against the Tshwane University of Technology at the UWC Sport Stadium.
Tickets will be on sale at the stadium. For more information contact Hayward Barends on 021 959 2023, or via email at hmbarends@uwc.ac.za.
