UWC Rugby aims for WPRU Super League B title

UWC are confident that they will lift the Western Province Rugby Union (WPRU) Super League B title this year.

After winning promotion from WPRU Premier League A, UWC look to continue with their winning streak.

UWC’s first team are currently unbeaten, winning five out of five matches, and earning maximum points for all games. UWC are in second place with 25 points, beneath log leaders Primrose Rugby Football club with 28 points.

Rugby Manager Mandisi Tshonti, says his team are doing very well and he is happy with the performance of the squad thus far. “We made our intentions clear from the very beginning of the season and it is to win the league and earn promotion to the Super League A,” he says.

Tshonti mentioned that playing 8 tough competitive games in the recent Varsity Shield competition, plays in their favour, as this prepared his players for the Super League B competition, considered the toughest in Western province club rugby. “The Varsity Shield did well to prepare us, it is evident in the team’s performance and we will use this to our advantage,” says Tshonti.

He said they managed to keep the bulk of the squad, and are happy with the addition of William Scott, from Pretoria, who came through the ranks of the Blue Bulls. “We were happy to see his experience, as lock, and are excited to see what the 19-year-old has to offer throughout the season,” he says.

He also mentioned that UWC’s Frederick Muller will be representing South Africa in the World University Seven’s Competition in Kazan Russia in July this year. “It is exciting to see our players develop and do well in their careers,” he says.

Tshonti describes the weekend of 18 May 2013 as a big one for the rugby side. UWC will face Mamre’s Hamlets RFC who will bring their A-game, along with a packed stadium in Hamlets’ hometown.
