UWC Rugby Captain joins WP Sevens Overseas Tour

Sensational UWC rugby star Frederick Muller’s career received a boost when he was selected to form part of the Western Province (WP) Sevens Team that will be touring overseas in August.

Muller, the captain of the UWC Rugby Club, was included in the 12-member WP Sevens Team who will be playing in the 2014 London and Dublin Sevens tournaments from 4 -19 August 2014.

“Personally it is a great feeling achieving this milestone and being selected for the team – getting another opportunity to play Sevens rugby at an international level and competing against some of the world’s best Sevens players,” says the proud Muller.

Muller has plenty of experience in overseas matches already – he was selected for the South African Student 15 side, which played Namibia in 2013, and also represented Team SA as part of the Rugby Sevens side at the World Student Games in Russia last year.

His sterling performance didn’t go unnoticed as he was named the 2013 Varsity Shield “Player that Rocks” for steering UWC to finish as runners-up, and was crowned UWC’s Sportsman of the Year in 2013.

Muller, BA SRES student, welcomes the call-up to the WP Sevens side and believes it will give him an opportunity to develop his skills further.

“I will use this opportunity to learn more about Sevens rugby and to sharpen my 15-a-side skills. Professionally, it provides another chance to show the province selectors my talent and that I am a versatile player who can play both formats of the game. I’m using this chance as a stepping stone to further my career”.

His aim is to be fit, fast and strong – he is currently participating in extra fitness, gym and skills training sessions to prepare himself for the tournament. He is looking forward to staying at Twickenham Stadium in England and says that it will be an unforgettable experience.
