Udubs rugby team thrash Rhodes in Varsity Shield

The UWC Rugby team made its intention of winning this year’s Varsity Shield tournament clear when they demolished Rhodes University 88-8 at UWC Sports Stadium on Monday 20 February 2017.

The Rhodes team fought hard, but Udubs dominated In a mainly one-sided encounter on a warm evening. Kurt-Lee Arendse scored a hat trick of tries while both Andre Manuel and Herschel Jantjies, who walked away as the Man of the Match, each dotted down twice. Other tries were scored by Brandon Valentyn, Shaine Orderson, Adrian Paarwater and Roderick Moses, with Keagan Fortuin making all 11 conversions.

The win puts the UWC side second on the log standings on 12 points – just two points shy of log leaders Walter Sisulu University, and in good stead to reach the competition finals of the competition.

The Varsity Shield champions will be promoted to the much-sought after Varsity Cup – the premier division of South African university rugby.

UWC’s next assignment is also at home against Tshwane University of Technology on Monday 27 February. Kick-off is at 18h30. All are why not come on down to the stadium and back your boytjies?
