UWC set to kick-off SNWL second season with plumb televised fixture
UWC’s women’s football team are all set to get the delayed second season of the SAFA National Women’s League (SNWL) underway.

Having announced a new kit sponsor earlier in the week, in Macron Sports, the Thinasonke Mbuli-coached squad will get their campaign underway at long-time rivals Tshwane University of Technology on Saturday, 24 April.

During the inaugural season of the SNWL, the two teams were able to play both their clashes before the pandemic brought a premature end to the season in March last year. TUT emerged victorious in their first meeting (3-2), at the ‘Operation Room’, before just holding on to secure a 2-2 draw in the return fixture in the nation’s capital city.

The ladies in red also finished best of the three varsity teams, claiming a runner-up position behind runaway champions Mamelodi Sundowns (who will again be favourites for the 2021 title having heavily beefed up their already star-studded squad). UWC, meanwhile, finished eighth with UJ two places worse off.

With no other Cape-based teams in the expanded 14-team league (JVW FC and Ma-Indies FC earned promotion via the SASOL League), UWC arguably do the most amount of travel. As such, being solid at home and regularly picking up results away will be critical to their hopes of finishing high up the table when the season concludes in mid-November. As will stellar performances from their Banyana Banyana squad members, among others.

Incidentally, being the pick of the opening weekend’s clashes, the UWC family will be able to watch their footballers LIVE. SABC Sport will be broadcasting the match, which kicks off at 14:30, on DStv channel 191 or OpenView HD channel 101. UWC Sport’s social media channels will also keep fans updated with news and insights on the team throughout the season - stay tuned!
