UWC stalwart appointed EMS Dean
UWC has appointed Professor Michelle Esau as Dean of the Economic and Management Sciences Faculty (EMS), from February 2018. She was a professor at the School of Government, and had previously acted as Dean and served as Deputy Dean: Academic Planning of the EMS faculty.

With a career at UWC spanning more than 20 years, Prof Esau is steeped in the culture of the University. An alumna, she started teaching at the School of Government in 1998. As Deputy Dean responsible for academic planning from 2011 to 2014, Prof Esau gained a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities that exist for the University’s largest faculty. She was involved in the launch of the BEcon programme that has public administration and economics as its key disciplines. The degree, partly funded by the Department of Trade and Industry, demonstrates the successful collaboration between business, government and the University.

As Acting Dean of EMS from 2012 to 2013, Prof Esau facilitated the piloting of the Chancellor’s Roundtable on Economic Development, an initiative aimed at promoting exchanges between academics, non-governmental sectors, business and the public sector. Aside from her considerable contributions to teaching and management, Prof Esau has contributed to numerous conferences, books and scholarly journals in her areas of expertise: human resource management and development, issues of democracy and public administration, and public sector ethics.

Within the University, Prof Esau has been a member of several internal committees, most recently serving on the senior appointments committee of the UWC Council.
