UWC stars get Banyana call-ups
Three former and current UWC Ladies FC footballers have been selected to represent the senior national women’s team, Banyana Banyana, in the upcoming 12-Nations Cyprus Women’s Cup.
Midfielders Leandra Smeda and Kelso Peskin, as well as striker Jermaine Seoposenwe, were named among the 23-member squad that is heading to Europe this weekend. The tournament takes place from 2 to 12 March and South Africa has been drawn in Group C along with Belgium, Czech Republic and Mexico.
Smeda, who was registered for a postgraduate diploma in sport development and peace last year, hails from Veldrift along the West Coast, and helped UWC to reach the semi-finals of the University Sport South Africa competition in December 2014. Along with six teammates, she was selected to represent the USSA national team.
She is an experienced Banyana Banyana member, having earned 36 caps and scored 13 goals. She is comfortable on both feet and can play on either side or in the middle of the field.
The Mitchell’s Plain-born Seoposenwe has been a prolific forward for the national team and has earned 25 caps, losing her place through injury last year. She completed her first year in BCom Accounting at UWC before she left to pursue both her academic and sporting careers at Stanford University in the United States late in 2013, where she is described as “arguably one of the most decorated signees in Stanford’s athletic department history”.
Peskin, from Bellville, has been a key member of the UWC Ladies team for the past three years, before leaving South Africa late last year to pursue her career at Tyler Junior College in Texas, also in the United States. This is her first call-up to Banyana Banyana subsequent to representing both the national Under 17 and Under 20 teams in the past.
