Three UWC footballers have been called up for the latest South African national women's team camp.
Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis has named UWC club captain Bongeka Gamede, Noxolo Cesane and Sibulele Holweni among her latest 24-player squad which will take on Zambia and Botswana in two friendly international matches.
These matches form part of the team's preparations for the 2022 CAF Africa Women’s Cup of Nations qualifiers kicking off later this year – the tournament proper will be held in Morocco.
Apart from Gamede (21), Cesane (21) and Holweni (19) the Banyana squad includes two more players with UWC connections - not forgetting UWC's head coach Thinasonke Mbuli assists the national team. They are Thembi Kgatlana, now based in Spain at SD Eibar, who will make her first return to the national fold since 2019 and goalkeeper Kaylin Swart.
South Africa will face Zambia on Saturday, 10 April at Wits Football Stadium before Botswana are their opponents - at the same venue - three days later. Both matches at Wits' east campus will kickoff at 15h00.
