The University of the Western Cape (UWC) women’s cricket team delivered another outstanding season in the Western Province Women’s Premier League, extending a period of sustained success for the programme.

Competing in the Women’s 50-over Premier League, which features ten teams playing nine matches each, UWC’s first team completed the campaign unbeaten, finishing top of the log. The league follows a straightforward format, with teams playing one another once on a balanced home-and-away basis.

Reflecting on the achievement, UWC women’s coach Ishmail September said: “We managed to go unbeaten in this campaign, which is something really special, especially in a league as competitive as the Premier League.”

The title marked a significant milestone for the side, representing a third consecutive 50-over championship. Earlier in the season, the team also claimed the T20 title, following a series of warm-up fixtures in September and October, 2025.

September explained that the success was built during the off-season, noting that: “We have a 12-week winter programme where we focus on technical skills, while also working in the high-performance gym on campus to maintain fitness and conditioning.”

In a further boost for women’s cricket at the university, UWC was granted permission to field a second team in the Premier League. The side, now known as the Caracals, gained valuable top-level experience and finished the season mid-table.

Highlighting the depth of the programme, September said: “We had two teams playing in the Premier League this season, and the Caracals are doing really well. They’re sitting mid-table, which is encouraging for player development.”

UWC’s women’s cricket structure remains largely student-driven, with the majority of players registered across different year levels at the university. As September put it, “we’re blessed with a lot of talent in the ladies’ department,” a foundation that continues to fuel success both on and off the field.
