UWC's Christo de Coning receives Tim Noakes Award
UWC’s Professor Christo de Coning has been awarded the Tim Noakes Award for Science and Research 2013, making him the second scholar from the University to receive the accolade.

The award was presented to De Coning of the Interdisciplinary Centre of Excellence for Sport Science and Development (ICESSD) by the Western Cape Provincial Government at the Western Province Sport Awards Evening in March this year. It followed the same honour bestowed last year on ICESSD Director, Professor Marion Keim, and has led to ICESSD’s acknowledgement as a Centre of Excellence for research in the field of sport and development.

De Coning was recognised for his research report,
The Case for Sport: Socio-economic benefits of Sport and Recreation in the Western Cape. The award states that De Coning has contributed in an outstanding way to the provincial, national and international understanding of the role of sport in development. His recent and original research on ‘The Case for Sport’ in the province resulted in a comprehensive and “unique 400-page report” on the socio-economic impact of Sport on development, using a survey, case studies and storytelling.

The award is also believed to have put South Africa on the map with the acknowledgement of the research done by De Coning, in conjunction with Keim, on Sport and Development Policy in Africa. This study includes 10 selected cases, resulting in the publication on
African Sport and Development Policy.
