UWC’s Fast and Flat race entries open

(Published - 30 April 2019)

In less than a month, the University of the Western Cape’s (UWC) flagship road race, the BestMed Fast and Flat 10 km, will take place and entries will open on Wednesday 1 May 2019.

Backed by Western Province Athletics (WPA), the annual 10-kilometre race – which incorporates a five-kilometer fun run – has become one of the most popular events on the province’s athletics calendar. WPA has listed the event as one of their Winter League’s, an encouragement for clubs to enter large numbers.

This year, the race will celebrate its 24th anniversary and organisers have introduced a new two-lap route. Much of the race will now be run on and around the UWC campus, making it a very spectator-friendly race. The race starts outside the stadium building and will finish on the athletics track.

The race is known for its flatness, which results in athletes running personal bests or season's bests. It is also used by Comrades’ runners as part of their final preparations to get in peak shape.

There will also be a weekly campus four-kilometre training session on Tuesday afternoons in the weeks leading up to the event, aimed at both the campus community and the public, to prepare for the race.  Acclaimed middle- and long-distance coach Johannes Kamfer will be available to offer additional training tips to participants with the first session taking place on Tuesday 30 April 2019.

For the first time this year, there will be an Inter-Faculty/Department Challenge.

Departments or faculties are encouraged to enter groups and run as "bus" teams. There will be prizes on offer for the Biggest "Bus" or most entries. In addition to prize money, there will also be lucrative time incentives for UWC elite athletes.

The total prize money for athletes amounts to R32 000 and entries for the race can be found at or at all major road races during the month of May 2019.
