UWC Director of Sport Administration, Mandla Gagayi, has been elected as the first vice-president of University Sport South Africa (USSA).
USSA seeks to develop and promote sport among students in South Africa.
Gagayi, who has served in USSA structures in different capacities since 2005, will hold his position in the new nine-member USSA national executive committee, which includes five assessors, until 2022.
“This election means another opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to student development,” said Gagayi. “For UWC, this election affirms the University's commitment to ethical leadership and student development. This also shows the faith that other universities have in UWC's ethos and position in society.”
Gagayi wants to be an active member of the committee by giving meaningful input and assisting the new President - Nomsa Mahlangu from the University of Johannesburg - in taking USSA forward.
“Our team's plan is to continue to build on the foundation that has been laid by our predecessors,” he said.
A number of UWC staff, students and alumni, including Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tyrone Pretorius, have served in USSA structures over the years.
