A University of the Western Cape (UWC) BCom Financial Accounting student, Takalani Fulufhelo Fakude, will jet off to the Philippines to participate in a global pageant, not only to show off his good looks, but to raise the South African flag as an environmental and sustainability advocate.

The 23-year-old trailblazer, who currently holds the titles of Mr Bushbuckridge Ambassador 2025 and Mr Eco South Africa 2025, will join other environmental advocates at the Eco International pageant in June. The competition focuses on environmental preservation and is aimed at mentoring men who champion green initiatives.

Born and raised in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, Fakude’s entry into pageantry started with a single opportunity that would change the trajectory of his life.

“I began my pageantry journey with my first competition, Mr Bushbuckridge Ambassador, which opened doors for me into the world of modelling and public representation,” he said.

As he joins fellow international advocates in the Philippines, Fakude said he plans to use the global stage to motivate others and drive positive change. 

“I am deeply committed to using my voice and platform to inspire change while proudly representing South Africa.”

Beyond the runway, Fakude is also a dedicated student, describing his academic journey at UWC from 2023 as “academically enriching and personally transformative”, having instilled in him a sense of discipline and time management.

“Balancing pageantry and academics requires discipline, time management, and consistency. I prioritise my academic responsibilities while also dedicating time to my pageant commitments, ensuring that both areas receive the attention they deserve,” he said.

His ability to juggle both worlds speaks of resilience, a quality he believes sets him apart on the global stage.
“What makes me different is my authenticity, resilience and strong sense of purpose. Everything I do is driven by a genuine desire to inspire and uplift others.”

As he prepares for the international competition, Fakude is fully aware of the responsibility that comes with representing South Africa. “This is bigger than me,” he reflected. “It’s about showcasing the beauty, diversity and strength of our country, and proving that no matter where you come from, your dreams are valid.”

After completing his studies, he plans to pursue a professional career in finance while continuing to use his platform to advocate for meaningful causes. 

“I want to grow both personally and professionally, and create opportunities that allow me to make a lasting impact,” he said.
