The University of the Western Cape (UWC) launched a bold, multi-million rand project in 2024 to modernise its entire network infrastructure — setting the stage for a faster, smarter, and more connected campus.

Over the next three years, this major upgrade will transform how students and staff connect, collaborate and learn. With our academic community relying more than ever on digital tools and platforms, UWC is building a future-ready network that supports everything from high-speed WiFi to cutting-edge research.

“This upgrade reflects our commitment to building a resilient, future-ready digital infrastructure at UWC. It’s not just about speed — it’s about enabling innovation, collaboration, and accessibility across the University,” said Mr Raymond Crown, Director: Information and Communication Services (ICS).

The current network, originally installed in 2014, had reached the end of its life. That’s why ICS has already replaced 90% of UWC’s 2 000 WiFi access points with the latest WiFi6 technology, delivering faster and more stable connections across all campuses — from lecture halls and libraries to residences and outdoor spaces.

But it’s not just about WiFi. More than 100 buildings are receiving upgraded network switches, boosting connectivity between departments and the ICS Data Centre — keeping your Zoom calls clear, your uploads fast, and your streaming smooth.

“Upgrading a network of this scale while keeping everything running is no small feat — but our team has risen to the challenge. And we’re already seeing the benefits of faster, more reliable connectivity,” said Ciske Remmetts, Network Manager at ICS.

The next phase of the project will eliminate dead zones by replacing legacy switches and ensuring consistent WiFi coverage in areas that were previously underserved. The final phase is on track to finish later this year, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the ICS Networks team and the Project Management Office.
