UWC's Yanga Brukwe leads by example

Yanga Brukwe proves that you can become successful despite your circumstances.

Yanga Brukwe, Accounting Honours graduate, is yet another example of what can be achieved at the Department of Accounting of the University of the Western Cape (UWC).

The 23 year old, who hails from Site B in Khayelitsha, is currently doing his internship at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Cape Town who were happy to have him after he proved that he was capable in his work.

Brukwe says that accounting is his passion; it is what he does best and what he understands the most.

Brukwe matriculated from Matthew Goniwe Memorial High School in Khayelitsha in 2007, and soon decided that studying Accounting at UWC would be in his best interest. “My first year was tricky because I was still trying to find my feet, but during my second and third year, things ran more smoothly,” he says. “In my first semester of first year I received 35%, but at the end of my second semester I received an A aggregate.”

Brukwe says the jump between third year and Honours year is massive. “It was challenging, but I did what was necessary to pass and achieve the results I did,” he says.

“Succeeding was not a matter of a choice for me - I must become successful. My family are relying on my success and I will not let them down,’ he says. He says his mother and grandmother in particular inspire him to reach for the stars.

“Just like my first and second year here at UWC, I am still trying to find my feet at PricewaterhouseCoopers. It is a new environment, there are new things to learn, and I am ready for this challenge,” he says.

“My goal is to understand auditing fully and to be respected like my colleague Hulisani Malange, who is also an ex-UWC student.  PWC seniors respect him and trust him, and that is what I want to achieve here,” he says.

Brukwe offered advice to students who want to follow in his footsteps. “The main thing is to never give up on your goals. Some people say that life is hard, but what can you do about it? All you need to do is to work hard to try to better your circumstances,” he says.
