UWC ready for Varsity Cricket

The University of the Western Cape Cricket Club opens the inaugural Varsity Cricket Tournament, 3 February 2015 in Potchefstroom, with everything at their disposal to come out victorious.

The boys from Bellville are coached by a top cricketer, namely former Proteas bowler Charl Langeveldt. The team boast a number of quality rising stars in their ranks, and have a better understanding of the T20 format of the competition.

UWC qualified for the event after they finished among the top eight teams at the University Sport South Africa games in December 2014. Varsity Cricket, which runs until 8 February, will be televised live and the winner will represent South Africa at an international student games in India later this year.

UWC’s manager and assistant coach, Chezley Fortuin, says these aspects will make the event more competitive and interesting. “The television coverage will be ideal to provide exposure to the up and coming stars that are playing cricket at just under the franchise level. And it is every player’s dream to represent his country.”

Fortuin believes that it is critical for the team to win their first two games against the University of Johannesburg today, and against local rivals Maties from Stellenbosch University tomorrow.

“We definitely want to go all out to win this tournament, and the first two games are important to build momentum,” Fortuin comments.
