Varsity Shield Home Final For UDubs

Home final for Udubs rugby

UWC Rugby team beat Walter Sisulu University (WSU) 50-26 in the semi-finals of the Varsity Shield competition at UWC Sports Stadium on Monday, 27 March 2017 to book their spot in the final of the competition.

Two tries by Andre Manuel and one apiece by Justin Theys, Michaine Fick, Kurt-Lee Arendse, Herschel Jantjies and Daniel Bock, as well as five conversions by Aidynn Cupido, ensured that Udubs reach the final for only the second time since the tournament commenced some six years ago.

After a shaky start to the game which saw the visitors earning an 8-10 lead, UWC demonstrated why they have been the team to beat this season, coming back strong and entering the halftime break with a comfortable 28-10 lead.

But WSU weren’t going down without a fight, coming back mid-way through the second half to reduce the gap in the score-line at 34-26. That seemed to wake up the home side, and the Udubs boys ran riot to overpower their opponents and finish the game with a commanding 50 -26 result.

It was the second defeat UWC dealt to WSU in just one week, after they hammered the same opponents 46-24 in East London in their last round-robin league encounter on 20 March.

Having finished the round-robin mini league on top of the log standings, UWC have earned a home final on 10 April 2017, and will have an opportunity to lift the Varsity Shield trophy in front of their supporters when they take on the University of Fort Hare. Fort Hare is the only team to have beaten UWC in the competition this year, with a narrow 33-32 win in Alice. So the Udubs team will be out for revenge...

Kick-off for the match is at 16h30 at the UWC Sports Stadium on 10 April. Come back your boytjies and witness a true clash of titans.
