Some political analysts forecast further instability in the short and long term, and now, a possible legislative solution for coalition governments has been mooted.
The Black Lawyers Association Student Chapter at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), in partnership with Ivyn Sambo, has launched an Essay Writing Competition to contribute to the current debates around the Government of National Unity and the political landscape.
Sambo, also known as The Student Investor, is a content creator, scholar and thought leader.
He said it’s an exciting topic to wrestle with: “The formation of coalition local governments in the past has not always been successful, in fact, it could be termed as a disaster.”
He added that often, it’s the residents who most rely on municipal services who have suffered at the altar of political expediency. “It might be time for a legal framework to be developed to ensure coalition governments work, and this is what we would like students to debate,” said Sambo.
Entries are now open and close on 02 August 2024. Email your submission to blasc@uwc.ac.za. The essay must not exceed 3000 words. The winning essay gets R1000.
