When Homba Mazaleni walked across the Miss South Africa stage, she grabbed every opportunity to shine and make her voice heard.

The 23-year-old studies biokinetics at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) but has already completed her sports science degree.

Homba made the cut for the Top 5, and when she walked to the microphone, she raised her voice for the rights of the LGBTIQ+ community.

“I am here to do one thing and one thing only. I am here to tell the stories of those who are marginalised and are less represented. I stand here firmly, standing for the LGBTQIA+ community. I am here representing all people who identify as queer.”

Homba announced that she plans to expand on a project that gives a platform to the stories, experiences and life lessons of the queer community across South Africa.

Besides pursuing her second degree, Homba is also a student intern at UWC and is passionate about health care. When she’s not in class or walking the Miss SA stage, you’ll find Homba zipping around campus on her skateboard, which she says is her favourite mode of transport.

Natasha Joubert was crowned Miss South Africa at the SunBet Arena on 13 August 2023.
