The University of the Western Cape (UWC) hosted Lajee Celtic, a football team from the Aida Refugee Camp in Bethlehem, in occupied Palestine, at its Main Campus in Bellville on 4 July 2024.
This visit came just days after UWC announced its decision to disengage from Israeli higher education institutions, reaffirming its solidarity with Palestine.
Lajee Celtic, supported by the Celtic support group Green Brigade, is part of the "Aida2Africa" tour, co-hosted by Sport4Humanity (S4H), Sport Stepping Stones (SSS) Foundation, and Africa4Palestine.
The team was warmly received by UWC’s Director for International Relations, Umesh Bawa, and Professor Abdulrazak Karriem of the School of Government, who took them on a campus tour, including the Mayibuye Archives.
A notable highlight was a photo opportunity in front of the South African, Palestinian and UWC flags, symbolising UWC’s support for Palestine.
In the afternoon, UWC partnered with the District Six Museum to host a two-part dialogue, "Struggles Shared," further emphasising the university’s commitment to social justice and support for higher education institutions in Palestine. This historic event highlighted UWC’s dedication to fostering international solidarity.
