The University of the Western Cape’s (UWC) significant contribution to the national sporting fraternity took centre stage in Banyana Banyana’s historic triumph today in reaching the FIFA Women’s World Cup last 16.
The senior national women’s team beat Italy 3-2 in Wellington, New Zealand to finish second in Group G and book their spot in the next round for the first time. UWC had no less than six current and former players and a staff member actively involved in the clash.
In the last World Cup four years ago, Thembi Kgatlana made history by scoring Banyana’s first ever goal in their inaugural opening match against Spain.
UWC alumna and Africa’s 2018 Women’s Player of the Year, Thembi Kgatlana, who captained the national team on Wednesday, led from the front to score the winning goal. She played the entire match along with current UWC Ladies captain Bongeka Gamede and alumnae Kaylin Swart in goal and striker Jermaine Seoposenwe. Current player Sibulele Holweni and alumna Nomvula Kgoale came on as substitutes, while UWC head coach Thinasonke Mbuli directed the team from the sidelines as the assistant Banyana Banyana coach.
It was another immense contribution from UWC to the Banyana Banyana team, and the University is proud to continue positively impacting the national team's success.
