A University of the Western Cape (UWC) lecturer has been awarded membership into the South African Young Academy of Sciences - one of the most prestigious organisations for young scientists in the country.
Dr Candice Franke, a chemistry lecturer, is one of a few highly skilled scientists across the country.
Dr Candice FrankeShe said: “Being inducted as a member of SAYAS is a huge privilege and honour. This academy was launched in 2011, and only 10 new members are inducted across the country every year. It is a platform for young scientists such as myself to contribute towards solutions to national and global challenges facing society. I feel honoured to be chosen as one of the elite few to be a member as of 2024.”
Fellow academic, Professor Fanelwa Ajayi, said it is an inspiring accomplishment to have a UWC academic as part of this elite group of scholars.
Dr Franke holds a PhD in the development of electrochemical nanobiosensors for the optimisation of TB treatment.
She loves research, student supervision and has a great passion for teaching science to young people.
Since 2016 she was appointed as part of a national nGAP (new generation of academics) programme responsible for lecturing and practical coordination within the chemistry department.
