Information and Communication Services (ICS) at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) recently hosted a Cybersecurity Awareness Day in the Jakes Gerwel Hall. Coinciding with Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the theme of the event was “Secure Our World”, which aimed to emphasise the importance of digital security for everyone at the university and raise cybersecurity awareness in general.

The event was opened by Prof Shaun Pather, Advisor to the Rector and Vice-Chancellor, who highlighted the importance of cybersecurity to UWC and its reputation.

The event featured a keynote presentation from Grant Hughes, a seasoned cybersecurity professional who emphasised that anyone can be affected by a hack or phishing attempt. This was followed by presentations from industry leaders, including EY, Microsoft, and DarkTrace.

Exhibition booths were set up in the Jakes Gerwel Hall, and exhibitors included IT vendors, as well as the Centre for Innovative Educational and Communication Technologies (CIECT), the Computer Science Department, and the Innovation Hub. The hub’s virtual reality goggles proved a hit with everyone. The turnout was excellent, with both students and staff engaging with the exhibitors as well as UWC Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Robert Balfour.

Interactive cybersecurity-related games proved highly popular throughout the day. The highlight for many was the lucky draw, where several attendees won prizes donated by our vendors, including new mobile phones, high-definition monitors, and a tablet.
