The University of the Western Cape (UWC) has rolled out the first of a number of vending machines across residences as a means to not only create convenience but to enhance the safety of students.

From the start of the year, and in consultation with student leadership around safety concerns, the University has implemented a raft of new measures to improve the student experience at the institution.

Earlier this year, shuttle routes were amended to improve security, and the University has created a safety forum with CPUT, Northlink College, SAPS, Community Policing Forum and Neighbourhood Watch in Belhar. 

Sujit Bhagattjee, Director of UWC’s Business Development Office, says the introduction of vending machines was but one of a number of initiatives toward the safety of students in residential complexes. 

“The machines hold goods that students can access on a 24-hours a day, 7 days a week basis within the complex – meaning the student never has to leave the compound or take a walk, risking their safety,” he said.

“We have security cameras installed but also security for the students in terms of the purchase. These machines are cashless, and this enhances the safety by deterring opportunistic criminals.”

Neliswa Majola, Placement and Administration Manager, Residential Services, said the service had begun in 2009 already but was stopped during student protests in 2015, and then further delayed during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Shaun Dodds, from the service provider, Atlantic Vending Company, said: “We believe in the ripple effect of conveniences. A machine filled with snacks and cool drinks is not just an amenity but an essential piece of everyday life that can be transformative in its own unique way. It serves a purpose greater than simply providing snacks and drinks: they provide a pick-me-up on a long study night or a refreshment during a moment of respite on a busy day.”
