The evaluation of the present orthography of Ewe has allowed to reveal both that this orthography is more phonetic than phonological and consequently less economical, and that it shows incoherences. Concerning tone notation, it is widely neglected if not merely left out in spite of noteworthy initiatives taken by such pioneers as Westermann. Upon examining all these insufficiencies, I make proposals for a more phonological and therefore more economical and more coherent orthography, and also for a rational notation of tones.
