This is an edited record of the proceedings of the historic Shona Language Conference held at the Great Zimbabwe Hotel in Masvingo, on 9 October 2006. The conference was sponsored by the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education. A total of 52 delegates attended the conference and among the participants were the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Dr S.I.G Mudenge; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Comrade George Charamba; the Director of the Centre of Advanced Studies of African Society (CASAS) Professor K.K Prah and the Director of the African Languages Research Institute (ALRI), Professor H. Chimundu to mention just a few. The primary purpose of the conference was to promote the use of indigenous languages as official media of communication and also to set up a language council for the Shona people with official and legal status. Papers were presented and the conference delegates resolved to set up the Shona Language Council (SLC) which would act as the executive arm of the Shona Language and Culture Association (SLCA) with authority to oversee all matters relating to professional standards in the teaching of the Shona language and culture. The Council would also be one of the bodies that shall advise the government on the formulation of a comprehensive national language policy based on a multilingual model, that caters for all the communities.
