 ... Scholarship on African diaspora identity, language, culture and religion shows the ongoing importance of both continental Africans and their descendants scattered throughout the world. In this paper, I focus on the Siddis (Africans in India, Habshi, Abyssinian, Cafree) in Karnataka, Janjira, Andhra Pradesh, Daman and Gujarat in order to explore the changing meaning of African identity as inflected in their life ways over time. Specifically, I will examine Siddi Muslim identity in the context of the neo-liberal policies of the Indian government within India's pluralist society. The paper also focuses on the Siddi minority identity in relation to India's multiple languages, cultures and faiths.
The Siddis (Africans in India), who are becoming the focus of recent Indian Ocean diaspora studies, offer important data for understanding how diasporic African communities create and recreate spaces to express themselves in their host society.
