What type of francophony to practise? A consequence of the colonial phenomenon, francophony has brought into cantact the French language and the endogene languages evolving within the so-called francophone area. This contact can be characterised rather as conflictual than as convivial. Indeed, French language plays the role of language of access to power and of social promotion and is thus upgraded as against the endogene languages confined to lower social functions. This results in linguistic insecurity (Labov 1972; Calvet 1993; Francard 1997), a phenomenon that I examine in the specific case of language policy applied in nursery schools in Togo.
