Collaborated International UWC Study: Proposed Single-Use Deposit Return System for South Africa

The findings of a joint international study have been released. The study evaluates the potential for a tailored Deposit Return System (DRS) for single-use beverage packaging designed to meet South Africa's needs.The report indicates that under such a system collection rates for beverage containers can increase significantly, particularly for plastic bottles and glass bottles.
 
 
 
Cape Town’s Commuters Trapped in ‘Apartheid City’ Legacy

The ‘Mother City’ remains an ‘apartheid city’. This week, the Global Traffic Index ranked Cape Town number one in South Africa - and ninth in the world - for the worst traffic. Commuters face up to 83 hours of delay yearly while travelling to work in the city centre.
 
Gugulethu Gardening Project showcases UWC community engagement in action

The Gardening Project Initiative in Gugulethu is a collaboration between the University of the Western Cape’s Interprofessional Education Unit and the Khoi-San-E Foundation that showcases the University's grounding in community.
 
 
 
Developing students’ academic literacies: A journey through changing times

For 30 years, the University of the Western Cape’s (UWC) Writing Centre has played a valuable role in assisting UWC students to become better academic writers. Over the years, Writing Centre staff have also engaged in scholarship of teaching and learning and professional development, and have collaborated with academics to assist them with developing the academic literacies of students within their own teaching and curricula.
