The Professor Who Helps The Silenced Sing Again

“I was the sort of child who felt very secure at home, but in the school system… I couldn’t voice my opinion the way I could at home. At school, I gravitated toward children who also didn’t fit in so well. So, socially, I found it very difficult just being authentically me.” These words from Prof Marichen van der Westhuizen reveal much about the path that led her to the Social Sciences.
 
 
 
New Book Exposes SA's Courtroom Language Crisis

A newly released, four-part book examines various aspects of the legal system, including the language used by complainants and witnesses, courtroom discourse, legal education, court interpreting, and the process of taking police statements. These are but some of the subjects covered in “Courtroom Discourse: Practical Insights from Legal Linguists", which is edited by Dr Zakeera Docrat, Dr Annelise de Vries, Prof Russell H Kaschula and Dr Paul Svongoro.

When you walk into Dr Anthony Williams' office at the Education Faculty, the first thing you’ll notice is the autonomous robot creations on his desk, and some of the spare parts scattered around the office.
