Professor Anthony Diala has been a social justice advocate since he began his academic journey, and is now determined to ensure that everyone under his tutelage becomes an agent for change. Food safety and health concerns are escalating worldwide, and a University of the Western Cape (UWC) graduate is helping to address them. Recently awarded a doctorate in Chemistry at UWC’s September graduation ceremony, she is advancing research that could protect society from everyday risks such as food poisoning, allergic reactions and even common headaches.
 
Thirteen-Year-Old UWC Aquatics Swimmer Makes Waves At African Championships

Thirteen-year-old Aqeelah Williams, a proud member of the University of the Western Cape Aquatics Club, delivered a standout performance at the African Zone Open Water Championships in Eswatini on 7 September 2025. Competing in the 3km open water race, Williams claimed gold in her age group and, remarkably, recorded the fourth-fastest overall time across all age categories – an extraordinary achievement at such a young age.
 
 
 
A Day of Triumph And Reflection At UWC Graduation

The University of the Western Cape’s Jakes Gerwel Hall was a hive of celebration, and some tears, as the University’s Spring Graduation saw years of hard work, patience and perseverance being rewarded. In total, 752 students graduated over two sessions on Friday, September 12.
 
Dr Retha Kotze’s Mission To Improve SA Heart Health

Meet research-enthusiast Dr Retha Kotze, a lecturer in nutrition and physiology at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) with a mission to study how factors that increase the risk of heart disease and nutrition work together to combat heart disease. Her research hub may be nestled in the Dietetics and Nutrition department, but her heart beats for South African people.
 
 
 
From Fridge Hunt To Campus Marketplace

It all started when Samkele Mthuli, a 24-year-old second-year computer science student at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), needed a fridge. Searching several platforms, some would respond, others would not; it was exhausting. But instead of letting the problem linger, Mthuli turned to what he knew best: web development.
