If you ever thought science was all lab coats and serious faces, you haven’t met Dr Chontrelle Willemse - a vibrant human being whose excitement for scientific discovery is exceptionally contagious. Recently, she was part of a Medical Bioscience Department team that studied sperm fertility in chronic Tik (methamphetamine) users, confirming that both long-term and even short-term use negatively affects male fertility. |

UWC Researcher Presents At G20 Indaba On Early Childhood Education
The voice of Early Childhood Development (ECD) teachers in South Africa was heard loud and clear on the world stage when University of the Western Cape lecturer Dr Kaylianne Aploon-Zokufa presented her research at a recent G20 meeting. The meeting took place in Cape Town on 18 August, where Dr Aploon-Zokufa was invited to present to over 300 delegates from G20 member countries. Born and raised in Mitchells Plain, her journey in higher education was far from straightforward. |

Born in Kuruman and raised among four brothers, Dr Hitzeroth’s journey from a small-town girl to a microbiology maven is anything but ordinary. She said: “Education was always important to my parents, and I enrolled for a BSc degree at Stellenbosch University.” She aims to fight food waste and support UN Sustainable Development Goal 2, which is about achieving Zero Hunger.

UWC Ladies Captain And Banyana Banyana Defensive Ace On Her Footballing Journey
Fikile Magama, captain of UWC Ladies FC and one of Banyana Banyana’s standout performers at the recent Women’s African Cup of Nations, traces her football journey back to the streets of Gugulethu, where she first kicked a ball with neighbourhood boys at just seven years old. Her love for the beautiful game was cemented in her family’s living room, watching football on Saturday afternoons with her uncles, later joining them whenever they would play a casual game in the streets. |

Professor’s Journey From Bishop Lavis To One Of UWC’s Foremost Linguists
He went from being a “kaalvoet laaitie vannie Bishop Lavis” to a top academic at the University of the Western Cape, dedicating his career to championing historically marginalised languages, particularly his mother tongue – Kaaps. Despite being a distinguished linguistics scholar, Prof Quentin Williams still cannot believe that he will be a full professor in just a few days. Prof Williams will deliver his inaugural lecture on August 25 at UWC.
