UWC’s Prof Priscilla Baker Honoured With The Order Of Mapungubwe By President Cyril Ramaphosa
Respected University of the Western Cape (UWC) scientist and researcher Prof Priscilla Baker has added another prestigious honour to her growing list of accolades as she was awarded the Order of Mapungubwe in Bronze by President Cyril Ramaphosa this week. On Tuesday, Prof Baker joined more than 30 distinguished South Africans honoured at this year’s National Orders ceremony in Pretoria, including revered Cape Town musician Jonathan Butler, who received the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver for his internationally acclaimed music career and contribution to the arts.

UWC Statement On Our Student Participating In The Global Sumud Flotilla
The University of the Western Cape (UWC) expresses pride in our postgraduate student, Hajar Kagiso Al-Tha’irah Ahjum-Mathee, who is representing South Africa on the Global Sumud Flotilla. The flotilla is an international humanitarian initiative seeking to challenge the blockade of Gaza. Earlier this week, the vessel Hajar was travelling on, the Vincovolo, was intercepted by Israeli forces while carrying essential humanitarian aid across the Mediterranean Sea. |

Untrained Food Handlers And Poor Hygiene Raise Alarm In EC Psychiatric Hospitals
Poor hygiene, unsafe food handling practices, inconsistent use of protective clothing and the reliance on untrained food handlers may be placing vulnerable patients at some Eastern Cape psychiatric hospitals at risk of food-borne illnesses. A new study by the University of the Western Cape (UWC), which assessed food safety practices among food service personnel, nurses, procurement staff and quality control officers, found serious gaps in food preparation, storage and the prevention of cross-contamination. |
